Driving times from ports: Bilbao 3hrs; Santander 4hrs; St Malo 10hrs; Cherbourg/Le
Havre/Caen 11hrs; Calais/Boulogne 12hrs. A crossing into Northern
Spain (Bilbao/Santander) gives a very easy drive to us. Otherwise a crossing
to one of the more westerly Channel ports saves time, with the best driving
route being via Bordeaux, the A64 highway passes close to Lourdes. From the A64 highway, junction
11 Soumoulou (if you come from Pau) or junction 12 Tarbes-Ouest (if you come
from Toulouse) to Lourdes. At the roundabout in Lourdes, turn left for
Argeles-Gazost and follow this road until it passes beneath the Funiculaire
du Jer. Take the dual carriageway for Argeles-Gazost. At Argeles-Garzost you
come to a roundabout where you turn left to cross the river. Follow to the
roundabout at Pierrefitte and then climb through the Pierrefitte gorge to Luz
St Sauveur. At Luz turn left for Barèges. Please note: If you are
coming from the direction of Toulouse some satellite navigators will send you
to junction 15 via Sainte Marie de Campan over the Col du Tourmalet. In the
winter, and even up into May, this is closed and in the summer it takes
longer to get to us anyway. Take junction 12 instead. |

Everybody loves the
train... Our nearest railway station
is Lourdes (45 minutes) which is served by mainline trains from Bordeaux or
Toulouse. www.voyages-sncf.com. Take the EUROSTAR train
through the chunnel to Paris from where the TGV ATLANTIQUE serves Lourdes
five times daily from Montparnasse station. There is also a nightly sleeper
"couchette" from Paris Austerlitz. For the London–Lourdes
route book well in advance (at least 8 weeks) for early booking discounts.
French Railways (SNCF) also offers an excellent value "railrover"
and family railcards. Highly recommended by all who come this way. You can book online at www.sncf.co.uk
or with Rail Europe. There is a bus connection
from Lourdes station to Luz St Sauveur and Barèges. |
